Kesavan Venugopal (22 May 1948 – 11 October 2021), better known by his stage name Nedumudi Venu, was an Indian actor and screenwriter from Kerala, who predominantly worked in Malayalam cinema. He acted in more than 500 films, primarily in Malayalam and also in Tamil, in a career spanning nearly five decades. He wrote screenplays and directed one film. Nedumudi Venu won three National Film Awards, three Filmfare Award South and six Kerala State Film Awards for his performances in various movies.
Beyond his iconic achievements as a versatile actor and screenwriter, Nedumudi Venu possessed a rich, earthy vocal talent that made him a distinctive playback singer in Malayalam cinema. His deep roots in Kerala’s traditional folk arts, theater, and Sopana Sangeetham—fostered by his long collaboration with legendary dramatist and lyricist Kavalam Narayana Panicker—gave his singing a natural rhythm and conversational warmth that professional playback singers rarely replicated.
His most celebrated playback rendition remains "Aalaayaal Thara Venam" from the 1982 film Aalolam, set to music by Ilaiyaraaja with lyrics by Kavalam Narayana Panicker. Venu's effortless, soul-stirring delivery turned this folk composition into an enduring cultural anthem across Kerala, widely recognized for its rhythmic elegance and native philosophy. Another classic in his singing discography is "Athiru Kaakkum" from the 1987 film Sarvakalasala, composed by M. G. Radhakrishnan.
